What makes remote DevOps roles different
In a remote setup on-call is a real discipline: runbooks need to be precise in writing, postmortems traceable, toil reduction measured. Every change is a pull request, every infra decision an RFC.
Stack: AWS or GCP (rarely Azure), Terraform or Pulumi, Kubernetes (with or without service mesh), Prometheus/Grafana, Datadog or New Relic, plus a CI pipeline (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Buildkite). Comfort with IaC and observability gives the biggest leverage.
How to apply successfully
- Bring concrete examples: a public Terraform module contribution, a postmortem doc, a cost-optimisation case with numbers.
- Multi-region or high-scale (>10k req/s) experience: state it clearly — rare and expensive.
- On-call availability transparently: state location + timezone and how much pager load you can carry.
- Take-home: 70% of remote DevOps roles screen with a small infra task (Terraform / K8s).
Frequently asked questions
- What is the pay?
- EU-remote mid: 75–110k EUR. Senior: 110–160k EUR. Staff/Principal: 160–230k EUR. US-remote mid: 130–185k USD. Senior: 180–260k USD. Staff/Principal: 250–380k USD. Cloud-cost-optimisation experience often pays a premium.
- Which cloud providers are expected?
- AWS dominates (~60%), followed by GCP (~25%) and Azure (~10%). Multi-cloud at enterprises. Kubernetes is effectively standard; cloud-only workloads (Lambda, Cloud Run) are growing.
- What does the hiring loop look like?
- Recruiter → hiring manager → take-home (infra task) → system-design round → behavioral. End-to-end 3–5 weeks. At senior+ a CTO or VP-Eng skip-level often gets added.
- Are junior remote DevOps roles realistic?
- Very rare. The few we tag as "junior friendly". A more realistic entry point is a junior backend role with infra responsibilities.
