About the Company

With 2.8+ million UK volunteers, OFH is the world's biggest health research programme. The Biosamples squad designs systems supporting biosample management, operations, and logistics from collection through laboratory processing.
Your Tasks
- Design, build, and run systems supporting biosample management and operations
- Help manage biosamples from collection through processing by laboratory partners
- Build internal web applications for Biosamples Operations team
- Develop data-processing services and integrations with lab partners
- Track and manage samples maintaining clear chain of custody
- Provide information on sample processing returns
- Work as full-stack engineer handling frontend, backend, and infrastructure in total ownership model
- Learn complex operational domain by working closely with Biosamples Operations colleagues
- Translate operational needs into well-designed software solutions
- Participate in code reviews, pair programming, and technical discussions
- Maintain and evolve live software components with observability focus
Your Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of TypeScript and Node.js
- Knowledge of modern frontend development including JavaScript/TypeScript with React or Next.js
- Experience building intuitive, user-focused interfaces
- Experience designing and implementing backend systems
- Prior experience with Azure, AWS, or GCP
- Comfortable working with Infrastructure as Code, ideally Terraform
- Knowledge and familiarity with Kubernetes bonus
- Knowledge of data modeling and design patterns
- In-depth knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL)
- Familiarity with other data stores
- Experience with modern agile development practices: code review, TDD, CI/CD, pairing, Git/GitHub
- Experience operationally managing live software: observability, logging, metrics, debugging
- Experience working with sensitive personal data
- Experience working in cross-functional teams with engineers, product, and non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to communicate with stakeholders outside own team
- Experience in small, growing organizations with ambiguity and flexibility valued
