Transport Planner
About the role
To contribute to the Bristol depot’s Service Delivery and Customer Experience by optimising fleet and resource utilisation to ensure efficient, safe, and timely delivery of products to customer sites.
As an integral member of the depot team, the role is responsible for ensuring compliance with company transport policies, procedures, and relevant legislation. The postholder will proactively identify operational issues, manage risks, and support continuous improvement in transport efficiency and service performance.
The role includes managing multi‑drop deliveries, resolving issues on the road, and coordinating dispatches, collections, and returns.
Responsibilities and Activities
- Transport Planning & Operations
Review order screens daily and plan transport activities in advance
Pull forward orders where possible to improve vehicle utilisation
Plan transport operations at least two days ahead using Transend/M4 systems
Build loads for IDN transfers and print all required IDN paperwork
Sort picking and delivery notes for the following day
Arrange haylage deliveries and manage assigned hauliers relevant to the site
- Driver & Fleet Management
Work closely with drivers within a transport office environment
Deal with day‑to‑day driver issues and provide operational support
Ensure all vehicles and drivers operate in line with safety standards and company procedures
Monitor compliance with transport legislation, health & safety, and environmental requirements
- Customer & Stakeholder Liaison
Book in deliveries with customers and manage delivery schedules
Respond promptly to operational changes, customer queries, and feedback
Work collaboratively with the wider operations team to ensure service excellence
Participate in transport and planning meetings
- Administration & Systems
Complete Transend pallet checks, order exports, and cross‑referencing
Receive depot deliveries (Goods In)
Raise purchase orders (POs) as required
Support the implementation of new systems and process improvements
- Performance & Continuous Improvement
Ensure transport plans meet defined KPI targets
Identify operational risks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement
Support initiatives to improve service delivery, cost efficiency, and sustainability
Your skills and experience:
- Essential
Proven experience in a similar transport, logistics, or planning role
Strong transport and logistics knowledge
Excellent time management, organisational, and planning skills
Strong customer service focus
Confident interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Ability to multitask and work effectively under pressure
Strong IT skills with high attention to detail
Ability to work independently, use initiative, and think quickly
Flexible and adaptable to a fast‑paced, changing environment
- Desirable
Good geographical knowledge of the South West
Experience in a multi‑drop delivery environment
Relevant experience is preferred; however, candidates with a positive attitude, strong willingness to learn, and the right behavioural attributes will also be considered.
